Egg Salad Sandwiches

Last week Michelle, my lovely wife who is her own person, and I signed our revised wills and power of attorney documents. Life maintenance and adulting are important, after all.

The phrase “serve egg salad sandwiches” is in my will. It’s in reference to what I’d like folks to eat (or have the chance to eat) at my celebration of life.

A mentor of mine, Brian, introduced me to the idea of egg salad sandwiches.

The story goes that it is important to treat people in our lives with kindness, respect, dignity, inclusion, and joy.

These are the things that build healthy communities fueled by safety, care, and reciprocity.

If you choose not to treat people in such ways or strive to build such communities, well, you aren’t going to need many egg salad sandwiches at your celebration of life.
