If you live on the West Coast like I do then you might be struggling with the damp greyness of our weather. Or maybe you’re having a hard time sustaining your new year’s resolutions. According to Cliff Arnell, a professor at Cardiff University in Wales and the developer of the “Blue Monday formula”, which calculates factors such as weather, debt, time passed since Christmas, failed new year’s resolutions, low motivation and the need to take action – this time of the year is primed to make you feel down in the dumps. Health officials seem to agree with Arnell. According to them, this time of the year is generally known as one of the most depressing times of the year. Here are four tips for beating the winter blues.
Intentionally play with your friends
Nothing beats away Blue Monday like spending time with friends. Whether it’s a nice lunch during the work week, a fun walk along the seawall with a long-time friend or a rambunctious dinner party – it’ll all do the same trick. Friends feed our souls and reconnect you with your community, amp up your energy and bathe you in the warmth of friendship. If you’re feeling down, call/email/connect with a friend.
Go with technology
Yup – there’s a technological solution to just about everything, right? Google sunlight lamp and all sorts of lamps pop up. Full disclosure: I haven’t tried one of these things. But I hear good things from friends. If you’re really struggling with Vitamin D, think about hooking yourself up with this cool innovation.
Plan a trip
We can’t take credit for this one. But it really does work! The Muse.com suggests doing some trip planning. Whether it’s that big summer trip round the world, or a short weekend jaunt to a nearby town, projecting forward and looking forward to an upcoming event can be a sure fire way of looking past the doldrums.
Exercise
Ok. This might sound simple, but it really works. Not only will it jack up your endorphins, but it’ll also maximize your exposure to sunlight if you head outside. If you hate the rain/wind/snow, try to exercise next to a window so you’ll at least benefit from a bit of extra sunlight.
