As some of you may know correspondent Theo Lamb and I are an item.
Many of you might also know that we try our best to keep Friday night as date night. It’s a time for the two of us to spend time together, go out for a nice meal, movie or walk and generally reconnect. It seems these days date nights aren’t really all that “hip” anymore.
I’m not too sure why that is.
Maybe it’s interconnectedness of media in couples’ lives or the general societal trend among young people to hang out in groups rather than 1 on 1. Maybe it’s just that people don’t feel like they have enough time for dates. Sometimes it’s tricky keeping the calendar free (Friday nights being prime time to meet up with friends and all). But like any sort of specialty diet, the more you stick too it, the easier it becomes and for you, the healthier your relationship feels.
The best thing about Friday Date Night for Theo and I is we get to relax with someone we love, cherish and care about and not worry a lick about being “on”. We get to do just what we want (sort of selfish I know) rather than what we have to do (work) or what the group wants to do (consensus among friends and colleagues). It also reminds us that in the hectic hustle bustle of life, we’re together with that partner for a reason. Date nights are like the super glue that bonds our community of two together.
And nothing is a better date night than blog writing together for the Potentiality.
nice Kurt. I support you and Theo in your date nighted-ness! Great photo too – classic shot from Lady and the Tramp.
hmmm…what is that about not being ‘on’ — I think, good sire, that you are ‘on’ during a date night — and not in the dirty way. Are not dates also about performing; being something that is desirable and interesting? Because I know whenever I see the two of you on a date you both look both desirable and interesting — again not in a dirty way…
The lovely big Al and had a date night when we were both working — Thursday. We found that day best for starting the slide to the weekend, while also having Friday free for those consensus-based activities.
Ah…date night — great post Kurtheo!!
So no Starcraft this Friday, then?
Maybe. Theo considers Startcraft 2 to be romantic I think.
Kurt
Michelle and I don’t do date nights. We do taco night, chili night, yelling night, and dress-up-like-your-favourite-historical-figure night (it’s Tuesdays, if you’re ever in the neighbourhood). Because, for us, every night is date night.
Seriously, though, one of my favourite things about Michelle is her ability to make nearly every moment – or any moment – an intimate one. I guess I’m more of a stream-of-consciousness partner in this way. Rather than compartmentalize human interaction into a date night, Starcraft night, movie night, taco night, family dinner night, or brush-Michelle’s-hair night, I like to infuse as much of our togetherness as possible with the qualities of a date night.
Do date nights happen because people are too busy and need to slot in specific moments for intimacy? This seems counter-intuitive and ridiculous; but, given the way of the world, also necessary. Because, hey, shouldn’t every night be date night?
Great post, Kurt. Ignore John – it’s good you guys are so organized! (c;
Although – I’d love to show up as the Red Baron at John’s dress-up-like-your-favourite-historical-figure night-thingy…
