I’ve written about the power of blending work and life. Perhaps what we really need is worklife harmony.
There are risks to blending worklife. When we blend our worklife we gain efficiencies by integrating devices and making what we do part of our identity. The risk here is that, as an outcome of worklife blend, we are always working with purpose, often for someone else. No one should let a single institution define our sense of self.
Instead, we should live in harmony with society. Work is not just job. Work is the purposeful expending of energy or effort on a task to achieve a goal or end. Work goes into our homes, families, communities, hobbies, and relationships.
Aspiring to achieve harmony in our worklife means that we need to, first, think differently about work and, secondly, recognize that we always have a choice in terms of where we put our time.
When we face and solve worklife challenges we will likely create harmony for ourselves and others that benefits our communities.
