The Potentiality’s Cartoonist in Residence, Phil Skipper, has an interesting take on creativity. Here is how Phil captured our personal and collective definitions of creativity: “Creativity means artistry. Poetry, web design, math, bicycle repair, public speaking. Regular people do such things in regular ways. Artists make such things memorable. Creativity is the soul of a community. You will use this competency to do what you love.”
Because with ideation, tolerance for risk and a love of play, creatives inspire people in ways that build community and enhance well-being.
Enjoy!
John says creativity is IDEATION
Ideation is free-for-all brainstorming where ideas bounce around the room like popcorn bounces into – and uncontainably out of – a bowl. And I mean all the ideas: good ones, bad ones, great ones, irrelevant ones; at this stage of the creative process there are just ideas and no limit to their potential. Get as much on the whiteboard as possible. Worry about being realistic later.
Kurt says creativity is RISK
Often the most creative ideas and initiatives require someone to think in a way that might not be considered or even accepted. Pushing the envelope can be scary. But making a calculated risk and doing something that many might consider “ballsy” is a surefire way to not only create something that’s unique, but something that is also memorable.
Mike says creativity is PLAY
Play encompasses everything that fosters creativity. When applied to work it opens up possibilities, defines and redefines rules and boundaries, and develops positive motivation. Play for play’s sake alone develops social bonds and competitiveness that are a foundation for creativity. Play moves us beyond the mechanistic approach to problem-solving and production and into the creative realm of complexity. Embrace play and you embrace a powerful and lasting tool for creativity.
